Alma Russ

Appalachian folk-rock

Thursday, February 27th, 7.00pm (doors open at 6.30pm); $25 adv / $28 dr

Alma (say it like Alamo) is a vocalist, songwriter, and musician out of Western North Carolina. She plays patchwork music: country, folk, and Appalachian roots sewn together to make something unique.

She started taking fiddle lessons around age 12, practicing old-time tunes outside because of the dying-cat noises, and then she went on to learn clawhammer banjo and guitar. She learned about songwriters like John Prine and Townes Van Zandt, and she fell in love with the art of songwriting. She's played in lots of bands, but she's mostly a solo act these days. She spends a lot of time on the road playing in bars, listening rooms, restaurants, cafes, and the occasional street corner.

Her musical influences include country gold, bluegrass, folk, old-time, and americana. She attributes inspiration to artists such as Allison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Bobbie Gentry, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Lucinda Williams, and so many more.  She’s thankful to be doing what she loves!

Fresh off a first place win at the 2023 Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival band competition, Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light have been captivating audiences throughout the northeast.

With songs as sweet and biting as the nectar and venom in her voice, Sumner's lyric-forward writing and penchant for snaking chord progressions demand something far beyond folk conventions, highlighting the acrobatic range of her brilliant bandmates Kat Wallace (fiddle) and Mike Siegel (upright bass).

Sumner is no stranger to the stage. She spent her early career on the bluegrass circuit, singing and writing with the genre-bending Boston group Twisted Pine. Since setting out on her own, Sumner's songs have been critically acclaimed, winning the Lennon Award in the folk category of the 2021 John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her song "Radium Girls (Curie Eleison);" earning her a spot in the Kerrville New Folk Competition; and being chosen four consecutive yearsby WBUR/NPR as one of the top Massachusetts entries in the Tiny Desk Competition.

Rachel Sumner & Traveling Light released their debut LP in the summer of 2022 to critical acclaim.
